We started this project by taking pictures of ourselves and drawing them with white colored pencils on black paper. This helped us to figure out what we would have to do on our paintings since we would be using subtractive techniques. Instead of starting with the dark areas and outlines, we were forced to start in places we weren't used to. We started our paintings by adding the gesso to composite board and sanding it. We did this three times before we painted our whole boards with the oil paint. We then used cotton balls and swabs to remove the oil, sometimes using mineral spirits to get even more off.

This project was enjoyable to me because I was forced to start the painting in an unconventional area. I would usually start at a dark line on the edge, but, since I was removing paint, I had to start in a background area that didn't really have a definite line. It was also cool to see it all come together at the end with a few small touches to the corners of the mouth and glares in the eyes. This project was a little messy, but most of the mess could be prevented by careful cleaning of tables and using gloves. I think that if I did this again, I would like to do my whole body and possibly add props.
